How to delete an invoice in MYOB
In MYOB Business you delete an invoice from the invoice itself, once any payment recorded against it has been deleted. Deleting removes the invoice completely, so if you need to keep a record of it, MYOB suggests cancelling it with a credit instead.

Key takeaways
- MYOB Business removes a deleted invoice completely, so nothing of it stays in the file.
- An invoice with a payment recorded against it can't be deleted until that payment has been deleted.
- To close an invoice but keep a record of it, MYOB suggests creating a credit for the invoice amount and applying it to the invoice.
Before you start
Check two things first. Has a payment been recorded against the invoice? MYOB won't delete an invoice that has one, so the payment has to be deleted first. And do you need to keep a record of the invoice? Deleting removes it completely from MYOB.
If the invoice has already gone to the customer, or you'd rather the history stayed in the file, cancelling may suit you better than deleting. MYOB's way to cancel an invoice without deleting it is to create a credit for the invoice amount and then apply that credit to the invoice. MYOB says this closes the invoice without affecting your account balances.
Steps
- Go to the Sales menu and choose Invoices. The Invoices page appears.
- Click the invoice you want to delete to open it.
- Click the ellipsis menu (...) and choose Delete invoice.
- At the confirmation message, click Delete.
Note
What changes afterwards
The invoice is removed completely from MYOB, and there's no undo. If you had to delete a payment along the way, that can't be undone either. MYOB notes that deleting a payment takes it off the invoice it was applied to, and that a payment already matched to a bank transaction or reconciled means redoing the match or the reconciliation.
If the invoice was paid with a customer credit rather than money, deleting that applied credit makes the credit available again, to refund or to apply to another invoice.
If it doesn't work
In a browser, the blocker MYOB names is a payment against the invoice. If you use AccountRight on the desktop instead, MYOB lists more checks: your user role must allow deleting, the security preference must allow transactions to be deleted rather than only reversed, the sale can't be in a locked period and must be in the current financial year, and any payment, deposit or credit applied to it must be deleted first.
