How to delete a payment in MYOB
To delete a customer payment in MYOB Business, open the invoice it paid, click the payment's reference number in the Activity history, then click Delete. The invoice reopens, and the deletion can't be undone.

Key takeaways
- Deleting a customer payment takes it off the invoice it paid, and an invoice it had closed becomes open again.
- A deleted payment can't be brought back, and one that was matched or reconciled leaves that match or reconciliation to redo.
- A payment that hasn't been matched or reconciled can have its bank account, description, reference and date changed without deleting it.
Before you start
Be sure deleting is what you need. If only the bank account, description, reference number or date is wrong, you can edit those on the payment instead, as long as it hasn't been reconciled or matched to a bank transaction. They're the only details MYOB lets you change, so a payment with the wrong amount or on the wrong invoice is one to delete and enter again.
See whether the payment has been matched on the Bank transactions page or included in a bank reconciliation. Deleting it means you'll have to redo that match or reconciliation afterwards, so it's worth knowing before you start.
If the invoice was settled with a customer credit rather than money, these same steps remove the applied credit instead of a payment.
Steps
- Go to the Sales menu, choose Invoices, and click the invoice the payment went against.
- Scroll down to the Activity history at the bottom of the invoice.
- Click the reference number of the payment you're deleting. For an invoice paid with a credit, click the reference number of the applied credit.
- Click Delete.
- When the confirmation message appears, click Delete again.
Note
What changes afterwards
The payment comes off its invoice. If that payment had closed the invoice, the invoice is open again and the customer owes the amount once more.
There's no undo. A payment that had been matched to a bank transaction or reconciled leaves a match or reconciliation to redo. Deleting an applied credit, rather than a payment, puts the credit back where it can be refunded or applied to another invoice.
With the payment gone, you can enter it again with the right details, against the right invoice.
If it doesn't work
If you use AccountRight on the desktop, the security preference has to allow deleting. Go to the Setup menu, choose Preferences, open the Security tab and deselect Transactions CAN'T be Changed; They Must be reversed, then click OK. After that, open the sale from the Sales Register in the Sales command centre, click History, open the payment with its zoom arrow and choose Delete Payment from the Edit menu. Once it's deleted, MYOB's desktop help notes you can change the customer on the sale or delete the sale itself.
Still only seeing Reverse Payment on the desktop? A payment from a closed financial year, or one from a year that has been rolled back, can only be reversed. For a payment grouped with undeposited funds, MYOB points you to its help on preparing a bank deposit. Deposits on orders are handled separately again.
On the desktop, deleting a reconciled payment can throw the reconciliation out of balance. Undo the bank reconciliation first, delete the payment, then reconcile the account again.
