How it works
Payroll tax in New South Wales is payable once an employer's taxable wages across Australia for the year pass the NSW threshold. Only the wages paid in NSW are taxed there.
An employer with wages in more than one state gets a share of the threshold as its deduction: the NSW wages as a share of the Australian wages. The calculator subtracts that deduction from the NSW wages and applies the rate to what is left.
The threshold and rate for each year are in the table below, from the Payroll Tax Act 2007 and Revenue NSW.
Thresholds and rates
| Setting | 2025-26 | 2026-27 |
|---|---|---|
| Annual threshold | $1,200,000 | $1,200,000 |
| Rate | 5.45% | 5.45% |

What the result assumes
- The employer paid or was liable to pay taxable wages in Australia on every day of the financial year and isn't a member of a payroll tax group.
- The wages you enter are taxable wages with exempt wages left out, and the Australian wages include the NSW wages.
- The result is the tax for the whole year, which the annual reconciliation settles, not a monthly payment.
- It doesn't decide which payments are taxable wages, or in which state a wage is taxed.
