How it works

Tasmania charges payroll tax once an employer's Australia-wide wages for the year are more than the threshold amount. At or below that amount nothing is due, and a business with no Tasmanian wages owes Tasmania nothing, however large its total.

Rather than a single rate, the Payroll Tax Act 2008 sets two bands. Wages between the threshold amount and the top tax bracket threshold are taxed at the lower rate, and only wages beyond the top tax bracket threshold pay the higher rate, so stepping into the upper band leaves the tax on the lower band as it was.

When some wages are paid in other states, the threshold amount and the top tax bracket threshold both shrink in proportion to the Tasmanian wages divided by the Australia-wide wages. The scaled threshold amount becomes the deduction, and the bands start and stop at the scaled amounts.

Neither the thresholds nor the rates moved between 2025-26 and 2026-27. Each year's values are listed in the table below.

What the result assumes

  • Wages were paid in Australia throughout the financial year, by an employer that stands alone rather than inside a payroll tax group.
  • Both amounts typed in are taxable wages with any exempt wages already removed, and the Australia-wide amount includes the Tasmanian one.
  • What it shows is the liability for the whole financial year, not an instalment due during the year.
  • Results run to the cent, whereas the State Revenue Office Tasmania's published examples round the year's tax down to a whole dollar, so the two can differ by some cents.
  • Working out which payments count as wages, or whether a particular wage belongs to Tasmania or somewhere else, is outside what it does.

Questions about this calculator

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly.

Does Tasmania's higher rate apply to every dollar of wages?
No. It reaches only the wages above the top tax bracket threshold. The band from the threshold amount up to that point keeps the lower rate, however much the employer pays overall.
How do the bands work for an employer with staff in other states?
Both band edges are scaled down to Tasmania's portion of the Australia-wide wages. A smaller Tasmanian portion brings a smaller deduction and a lower point where the higher rate begins.
Is anything payable when Australia-wide wages equal the threshold amount exactly?
No. Tasmanian payroll tax starts only once Australia-wide wages are more than the threshold amount, so wages sitting exactly on it attract none.
Did anything change for Tasmania in 2026-27?
No. The threshold amount, the top tax bracket threshold and both rates are the same in each of the two years the calculator covers.

General information

The calculator applies the thresholds and rates in the Payroll Tax Act 2008 (Tas) to the wages entered, as general information that doesn't weigh up any one employer's situation. Questions about registering for payroll tax go to the State Revenue Office Tasmania. Sources checked 15 October 2026.
