How it works

Western Australia's Act builds long service leave in blocks. Completing the full entitlement period in the table below earns an initial block, and each further period of service shown there earns another. While the employee is still working, the calculator counts only the blocks they've completed.

When employment ends at or after the full entitlement period, the employee is paid for each completed year of service, and a part year at the end isn't counted. A dismissal for serious misconduct, if this describes what happened, is the exception: then only the completed blocks are paid, not the years since the last of them.

Between the minimum and full entitlement periods, WA pays a proportion on leaving for every reason except a dismissal for serious misconduct, so a plain resignation qualifies too. That proportion counts part years as well as whole ones.

What the result assumes

  • The employee is taken to have worked for a single employer, without a break, and only in Western Australia.
  • All days in the employment period are counted as service, so periods that may not count under the Act, such as unpaid leave or stand downs, aren't removed.
  • The WA Act is the only source of the entitlement here: an award, agreement or portable scheme with terms of its own would change the result.
  • Leave already used isn't subtracted, so the weeks shown are the total built up before any leave was had.
  • Pay means the ordinary weekly rate for normal hours at the end date; varying hours or pay call for averaging, which isn't offered.
  • Part years in a proportion are counted in actual days of the service year, and published examples that count them another way can differ in the last decimal place.

Questions about this calculator

Something else on your mind? Ask us directly.

Does a resignation before the full entitlement period pay anything in WA?
Yes, once the employee has passed the minimum period in the table below. WA pays a proportion on leaving for any reason other than a dismissal for serious misconduct.
What's paid after a dismissal for serious misconduct in WA?
If this describes what happened and the employee had completed the full entitlement period, only the blocks they'd fully completed are paid. Before the full entitlement period, nothing is paid.
Why isn't the last part year paid when someone leaves after the full entitlement period?
At that point the WA Act pays for completed years of service, so the calculator counts whole years only. Part years count only in a proportion paid between the minimum and full entitlement periods.
Can an employee take leave for the years since their last block?
The calculator shows only completed blocks while someone is still employed. Leave taken in advance by agreement with the employer isn't covered.
