How workers compensation works in South Australia

  • ReturnToWorkSA says a business is likely to need to register if it employs workers who usually work in South Australia. This includes businesses from outside the state that employ workers there.
  • Registration for work injury insurance cover is due within a set number of days of employing, and cover can be applied for before employing workers.
  • A business whose total wages for the financial year will be below the published threshold generally doesn't need to register. If a worker is injured at work, it must report the injury, register and pay the minimum premium.
  • The premium is based on the remuneration paid to workers, the industry premium rate and the income support costs of any time lost claims. Base premium is total remuneration multiplied by the industry premium rate.
  • Employers with no claims pay the discounted premium, and the discount depends on the size of the base premium. New employers that are not subject to a transfer of business pay base premium for a full financial year before ReturnToWorkSA's premium system applies to them.
  • ReturnToWorkSA also collects a work health and safety registration fee for SafeWork SA, payable on top of the premium.
