How workers compensation works in Tasmania
- WorkSafe Tasmania says an employer must either take out a workers compensation policy with a licensed insurer or apply to the WorkCover Tasmania Board for a permit to self insure.
- A permit to self insure is usually for large businesses. WorkSafe Tasmania publishes the list of licensed insurers in Tasmania.
- A domestic worker in a private household is deemed to be a worker once they reach a set number of hours of employment. The Workers Rehabilitation and Compensation Act then requires the householder to take out a policy with a licensed insurer.
- Suggested premium rates are developed for the WorkCover Tasmania Board and published by WorkSafe each year as a guide for employers and insurers. The report notes that insurers should do their own analysis to support their premium rates.
