Long service leave in Tasmania
This page covers employees who are not mining employees. Mining employees have different entitlements under the same Act. In Tasmania, long service leave comes from the Long Service Leave Act 1976 (Tas), which sets leave in blocks of service and has its own rule for an employee who dies. The values in the table are read from s 8 and s 9 of the Act.

- The employee leaves on or after reaching retirement age
- The employer ends the employment for any reason other than serious misconduct, including redundancy
- The employee dies
How it works in Tasmania
- Tasmania builds leave in blocks under s 8. One is due once the full entitlement period is reached, and another after each further block of service; the table sets out how many weeks each holds.
- An employee who stays on takes leave in those completed blocks. Time served beyond the most recent block becomes leave that can be taken only when the next block is complete.
- When employment ends after the full entitlement, Tasmania counts the whole period, part years included, rather than only completed blocks or years.
- Before the full entitlement but after the pro rata period, s 8 pays a proportion only for a reason on the list below. A resignation for no listed reason does not qualify, and neither does dismissal for serious misconduct.
- Death is dealt with in s 9. If an employee dies after the pro rata period but before the full entitlement, the payment is the share in the table of their whole period of employment, counted day by day.
- After the full entitlement, a death pays the leave accrued in completed blocks, plus that same share of the days served since the last block was completed.
