How public holidays work in Tasmania
- The Statutory Holidays Act 2000 sets the public holidays in Tasmania and the areas each one applies to.
- When New Year's Day, Australia Day or Boxing Day falls on a weekend, the holiday is held on the following Monday instead, or the Tuesday for Boxing Day on a Sunday.
- When Christmas Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday, it is still a holiday, and the following Monday or Tuesday is a holiday as well.
- An amendment to the Act made Easter Sunday a public holiday from 9 October 2026, so it is on the list from 2027.
- Anzac Day has no substitute or additional holiday when it falls on a weekend.
- Easter Tuesday, Devonport Cup and Launceston Cup are generally holidays for the Tasmanian State Service only.
