How public holidays work in the Australian Capital Territory

  • The ACT has its own public holidays as well as the national ones: Canberra Day in March, and Reconciliation Day in late May or early June.
  • All four days of Easter, from Good Friday to Easter Monday, are public holidays.
  • When Anzac Day, Christmas Day, Boxing Day or New Year's Day falls on a weekend, the list also has a public holiday on the following Monday or Tuesday.
  • The Holidays Act 1958 includes a bank holiday on the first Monday in August. Bank holidays do not apply to everyone, so check your enterprise agreement or award.
