ATO benchmarks for pet shops

Pet shops sell pet food, accessories and supplies, and some also sell fish, birds or small animals or offer grooming, with stock, rent, animal care and staff time as their main costs.

General information

These are the Australian Taxation Office's published small business benchmarks for pet shops, shown as the ATO publishes them for each turnover range. They describe the industry as a whole, not any one business, and they are not advice about a particular business. Sources checked 15 October 2026.

What sits behind these figures in the books

  • Cost of sales covers the pet food, accessories and animals bought for resale, adjusted for stock on hand at the period end, including bagged food in storage.
  • Food, bedding and care for the animals kept in store are recorded in the same account every period, apart from the pet food stock that is bought to sell.
  • Grooming income, where a shop offers it, is recorded apart from product sales, and supplier bills for each delivery are entered as they arrive.
