ATO benchmarks for picture framers

Picture framers earn from custom framing jobs and ready-made frames, with moulding, glass, matboard and the time spent cutting and assembling each frame as their main costs.

General information

These are the Australian Taxation Office's published small business benchmarks for picture framers, shown as the ATO publishes them for each turnover range. They describe the industry as a whole, not any one business, and they are not advice about a particular business. Sources checked 15 October 2026.

What sits behind these figures in the books

  • Cost of sales covers the moulding, glass, matboard, backing and hardware used in frames sold, plus ready-made frames bought for resale, adjusted for materials still on hand at the period end.
  • Deposits taken when a custom order is placed are linked to the job and its final payment, so each frame's sale is recorded once and the books show which orders are still unfinished.
  • Mat cutters, mitre saws and underpinners are recorded as equipment rather than framing materials, so the cost of these long-lived tools stays out of cost of sales.
