ATO benchmarks for shoe shops

Shoe shops sell footwear for men, women and children across many sizes and styles, with seasonal ranges and sales, while stock, shop rent and staff are their main costs.

General information

These are the Australian Taxation Office's published small business benchmarks for shoe shops, shown as the ATO publishes them for each turnover range. They describe the industry as a whole, not any one business, and they are not advice about a particular business. Sources checked 15 October 2026.

What sits behind these figures in the books

  • Cost of sales covers the shoes, boots, socks and shoe care products bought to sell, adjusted for the pairs still on hand in every size at the end of the period.
  • Stock counts are taken by style and size, so missing or damaged pairs show up and the closing stock figure matches what is actually on the shelves.
  • Returned pairs and exchanges are processed through the point of sale system, so refunds reduce turnover and the returned shoes go back into the stock records.
