ATO benchmarks for homewares stores

Homewares stores sell kitchenware, decor, lighting and soft furnishings in store and often online, with stock, rent, freight and staff time as their main costs.

General information

These are the Australian Taxation Office's published small business benchmarks for homewares stores, shown as the ATO publishes them for each turnover range. They describe the industry as a whole, not any one business, and they are not advice about a particular business. Sources checked 15 October 2026.

What sits behind these figures in the books

  • Cost of sales covers the kitchenware, decor and other goods bought for resale, adjusted for stock on hand at the period end, including stock held in a warehouse.
  • Freight and handling charges on incoming stock are matched to the relevant deliveries and included in the recorded cost of those goods.
  • Online orders paid through a payment platform are matched to the settlements that reach the bank, with platform fees and refunds recorded separately.
