ATO benchmarks for toy shops

Toy shops sell toys, games, puzzles and hobby items, with sales peaking before Christmas and in the school holidays, while stock, shop rent and staff costs are their main outgoings.

General information

These are the Australian Taxation Office's published small business benchmarks for toy shops, shown as the ATO publishes them for each turnover range. They describe the industry as a whole, not any one business, and they are not advice about a particular business. Sources checked 15 October 2026.

What sits behind these figures in the books

  • Cost of sales covers the toys, games, puzzles and hobby supplies bought to resell, adjusted for what is still on the shelves and in the stockroom at the end of the period.
  • Lay-by payments are recorded as deposits held until the goods are collected and paid in full, so turnover is not counted before each sale is complete.
  • Discontinued or damaged stock is checked against the amount expected from its sale, less any costs to complete or sell it, and written down only when that amount is below its recorded cost.
