ATO benchmarks for hardware stores

Hardware stores sell tools, fixings, paint and building materials to tradespeople and home owners, often on trade accounts, with stock, yard space, delivery vehicles and staff as the main costs.

General information

These are the Australian Taxation Office's published small business benchmarks for hardware stores, shown as the ATO publishes them for each turnover range. They describe the industry as a whole, not any one business, and they are not advice about a particular business. Sources checked 15 October 2026.

What sits behind these figures in the books

  • Cost of sales covers the timber, fixings, tools, paint and other goods bought for resale, adjusted for what remains in the store and yard at the end of the period.
  • Sales on trade accounts are recorded when invoiced and followed up until paid, so turnover includes goods supplied to builders even before the money comes in.
  • Forklifts, delivery trucks and shelving used to run the store are recorded as equipment, kept apart from the timber, hardware and other stock held for sale.
