What sits behind these figures in the books
- Cost of sales covers the cards, stationery, gifts, magazines and other goods bought for resale, adjusted for the stock still on hand at the period end.
- Magazines and newspapers supplied on a sale or return basis are matched to the supplier's credits for unsold copies, so cost of sales covers only what was actually sold.
- Money collected for lottery tickets and bill payments is recorded in its own accounts, apart from the store's own sales, so the commission earned on those lines is clear.
