ATO benchmarks for tobacconists

Tobacconists sell tobacco products and smoking accessories, and some also sell confectionery, drinks and other convenience items, with stock bought from wholesalers, shop rent and staff costs as their main outgoings.

General information

These are the Australian Taxation Office's published small business benchmarks for tobacconists, shown as the ATO publishes them for each turnover range. They describe the industry as a whole, not any one business, and they are not advice about a particular business. Sources checked 15 October 2026.

What sits behind these figures in the books

  • Cost of sales covers the tobacco products, accessories and other goods bought from wholesalers to resell, adjusted for the stock held in the shop and any secure storage at the period end.
  • Tobacco stock is high in value per item, so regular counts are reconciled to the point of sale stock records and any loss from theft or damage is recorded when found.
  • Card settlements and cash banked are matched to the daily totals from the point of sale system, so turnover shows every sale and gaps between the till and the bank are spotted early.
