ATO benchmarks for jewellers

Jewellers sell rings, watches, necklaces and other jewellery, and often earn from repairs, resizing and custom pieces, with stock, precious metals and stones, rent and security as their main costs.

General information

These are the Australian Taxation Office's published small business benchmarks for jewellers, shown as the ATO publishes them for each turnover range. They describe the industry as a whole, not any one business, and they are not advice about a particular business. Sources checked 15 October 2026.

What sits behind these figures in the books

  • Cost of sales covers the jewellery and watches bought to sell, plus the gold, silver, stones and findings used in custom pieces and repairs, adjusted for the stock held at the period end.
  • Each high-value piece is counted against the stock register at the end of every period, so items sold, missing or out for repair are identified and cost of sales stays accurate.
  • Watch and jewellery repairs sent to outside repairers are recorded against each customer's job ticket, so their cost is matched to the repair charge.
