ATO benchmarks for musical instruments

Musical instrument stores sell guitars, keyboards, drums, accessories and sheet music, and some also earn from repairs, hire or lessons, with stock, rent and staff time as their main costs.

General information

These are the Australian Taxation Office's published small business benchmarks for musical instruments, shown as the ATO publishes them for each turnover range. They describe the industry as a whole, not any one business, and they are not advice about a particular business. Sources checked 15 October 2026.

What sits behind these figures in the books

  • Cost of sales covers the instruments, strings, accessories and sheet music bought for resale, adjusted for the stock on display and in storage at the period end.
  • Where instruments are hired out, the hire fleet is kept apart from stock for sale, so hire income and the instruments that earn it are recorded separately.
  • Repair and lesson income is recorded in its own accounts, apart from product sales, and the parts used in repairs are entered as the supplier bills arrive.
